Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Heterobinuclear Copper(II)–Lanthanide(III) Complexes with N,N -Oxamidobis(benzoato)cuprate(II) as Ligand

Six new copper(II)–lanthanide(III) heterobinuclear complexes, described by the formula Cu(obbz)Ln(Me2-phen)2NO3 (Ln = La, Nd, Gd, Tb, Ho, Er), where obbz denotes the oxamidobis(benzoato) and Me2-phen represents 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Me2-phen), have been synthesized and characterized by the elemental analyses, spectroscopic (IR, UV, ESR) studies, magnetic moments (at room temperature) and molar conductivity measurements. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of Cu(obbz)Gd(Me2-phen)2NO3 complex has been measured between 4.2~300 K. The least-squares fit of the experimental susceptibilities, based on the spin Hamiltonian operator, H = –2J S1 S2, yielded J = +2.85 cm . The Gd(III)–Cu(II) coupling is ferromagnetic. A plausible mechanism for a ferromagnetic coupling between Gd(III)–Cu(II) is discussed in terms of spin-polarization.
